Voluntary Youth Services Agreement (VYSA)
Important: Ontario Age of Protection Update
On January 1st, 2018, Ontario increased the age of protection to include all children under the age of 18 years.
The information below is extracted directly from the Government of Ontario. By increasing the age of protection, 16-and-17-year-olds who are in need of protection are eligible for the full range of child protection services, which gives them a better opportunity to get the support they need and have better outcomes as they transition to adulthood.
What This Means for 16 & 17-Year-Olds
If you are 16 or 17 years old and you need protection, support, or a safe place to stay, you now have access to the full range of services through Children's Aid Society, just like younger children in care.
- You can voluntarily enter into a care agreement (VYSA) with CAS
- You are entitled to the full range of child protection services
- You can access housing, support, counselling, and education services
- You have the same rights as younger youth in care
- Transitional support is available as you approach adulthood
Transitioning to Adulthood
Ontario recognizes that young people leaving care need continued support to successfully transition to independent living. Services and planning begin well before you leave care to ensure you have the tools, skills, and connections you need.
